[edit] Summary

Lord Franz of Diarnay had seven sons; the youngest son was named Matthias. Neglected by his brothers, his exhausted and distant parents, and essentially everyone else, Matthias understandably latched on to the one person who was never allowed to ignore him, Hazel, the youngest daughter of a very close noble family. He became obsessed with her and fell in love with her. Despite this, his life and the choices he's made have made him callow and sarcastic, as such he treats her badly. Currently studying with her at Rayla Academy, embroiled in a conspiracy he can tell no one about, Matthias seems a lazy, witty (if mean-spirited) party-goer who has little drive or goals. No one knows how desperatley hollow he really feels ...

[edit] History

Matthias was born as the youngest of seven boys to House Diarnay. His parents were tired of raising children, and since he wasn't the girl to primp and pamper they had been hoping for, they couldn't be bothered to any effort into his upbringing, as they had his older brothers'. His mother was distant, sad, and seemed mostly dazed; his father was too busy, too tired, and too old.

Matthias fought as hard as he could to win their attention, trying his best to excel in everything that he touched, but his brothers had already more or less proved themselves in everything available, and despite the devoted and single-minded effort he put into everything he touched, Matthias was simply not an especially talented boy. Nothing ever set him apart from his brothers, everything he could do, one of them could do better, and even when he managed some small feat, Mother and Father weren't looking -- or just plain didn't care.

One day, he had enough. He changed himself completely in the span of a day, abandonning efforts to prove himself, deciding that if his life was a waste, he may as well waste it. His world became a whirl of fashion, parties, wine, class, and conversation, petty things that were easy to forget bigger things in.

The side effect being that he's become something of a phony shmuck and he knows it, but it's better than the alternative.

Only one thing was left of what he'd been before, and only one thing left that he gave a damn about. Lady Hazel of Aeda, the youngest daughter of Diarnay's close ally, Aeda. Matthias has been lumped together with Hazel since they were born. As far as anyone is concerned they're a single entity. Despite the fact they're as different as night and day, she is the only thing he turley cares about. Despite the fact that her naturally oblivious nature means she's never even had the thought that he could look at her as a woman, he always has. His feelings could be described as "one part love, two parts obsession." He takes great joy in inciting any sort of reaction from her, which leads him to be something of a gigantic asshole to her ofttimes -- although, the moment he realizes he's actually upset her, he tends to feel horribly guilty. More or less, she's the only person he feels is "real" in his world, and for that reason, there's no one else he would rather be around.

Thus, when Hazel left for Rayla Academy, and it was suggested that Matthias follow her, his complaints were half-hearted, despite the fact that, of all the things he was never good at, books were one of the things he was worst at.

His first two years at the Academy went by smoothly, although Matthias found Rayla [and the rest of the country, really] beyond all levels of dull and would say it to anyone interested in listening (and many not), but it had Hazel, which made it lifetimes better than the thought of dealing with his frigid home without her there. Besides, some of his brothers were smart, but none ever went to the Academy before. He would never admit seeing an bright side of the place out loud, of course.

At the end of his first year, however, things became odd at the Academy. Things began to disappear, out of nowhere. Matthias and Prince Ian of Dentoria (masquerading [badly] as a merchant's son named "Agi") attempted to investigate, both blaming the problem on a ghost. While no conclusive evidence was found, several days after he and Hazel headed home for winter break, a teacher was found, dead.

Through winter break, however, things ... improved rather drastically. Finally unable to stand it anymore, for Hazel's 20th birthday, Matthias finally expressed his feelings for her, and, to his surprise ... not only did she not mind, she found herself beginning to return them. Still unsure about what to think about this, Matthias is currently headed back to Rayla, where Korin is tense on the verge of all out war, and whatever killed the teacher is waiting.

Of course, this couldn't last long. Not long after returning to school, Matthias recevied a puzzling order from Lord Stephan of Rhia: to return home, and journey to House Keirnan, to impregnate the wife of the dying Lord Brendan in his stead. No one could know his purpose there.

Hoping she would become jealous, Matthias shared only the sketchy basics of the situation with Hazel, but she seemed apathetic. Since this time, he's sunk back into a depressive state, though he hides it as valiantly as ever.

[edit] Personality

Matthias tries to force himself to not take life very seriously -- tougher to get hurt by it that way, he figures. He's constructed this policy to himself that one's life is one big party, if you make it memorable, everyone loves it, and you have fun, it was a success. He tries to impose this lifestyle on Hazel a lot of the time, which she doesn't exactly appreachiate, but he thinks will do her good -- plus, it gets a reaction out of her.

He speaks casually, acting like something of a flippant asshole with rough language, a personality which he finds amusing. He prides himself on his wit, and his ability to rarely be beaten in an argument/spat/mud-throwing contest/childish whining game. He's very charming and sociable to those he doesn't care/only half cares about, but to people who matter to him, he's quite abrasive.

He has a lot of troubled emotions under the surface, and extremely low self esteem, but he doesn't show it to anyone. He has no idea who he or what his purpose are, and even though he's getting past the soul- searching age, no answers are becoming clear ... mostly because he keeps avoiding the question. He often tries to cover his insecurities with seeming casual arrogance, and doesn't like to talk about himself seriously -- or anything seriously, really. Though he never stops thinking about it or a moment, it is very, very rare that he ever lets seep out any of his hidden emotions.

[edit] Relationships

  • Franz, father, whose neglect shaped Matthias' life.
  • Arla, mother, detached and sad, who whispers say was smiling and mild before Matthias' birth.
  • Mitchell, brother, the responsible eldest Matthias always lived in the long shadow of.
  • Cagney, brother, whom Matthias has never felt he knew.
  • Iram, brother, whom Matthias loved and respected and modeled himself off of, until he realized that Iram cared as little for him as anyone else.
  • Gavin, brother, whom Matthias has never felt he knew.
  • Mason, brother, whom Matthias hates for being like his father.
  • Berkley, brother, who has taunted and teased Matthias since they were children.
  • Hazel, the woman he loves, with whom his relationship is very simple on her end and exceedingly complicated on his.
  • Prince Ian, a drinking friend from his days in Dentoria, who Matthias grudging admits he's attracted to.
  • Jace, who Matthias considers a close friend, though he would never voice it in those terms.
  • Eve, Lady of Rayla, who he worries about, banters with, and insults in turns.
  • Harriet, once the librarian at the Academy, who Matthias onces found crotchety and infuriating and now secretly finds pretty damn cool.
  • Eriena, wife of Brendan of Keirnan who Matthias impregnated on order from Lord Stephan of Rhia, and who he isn't incredibly fond of.
  • Brendan, the now deceased once lord of Keirnan, who Matthias was quite frank about his dislike of.
  • Lorcan, who knew him as a child and as such he finds uncomfortable to talk to.

[edit] Appearance

Matthias has the chin-length blond hair and brown eyes shared by all his brothers. He's of average height, and tends to dress well, almost foppishly, putting an absurb amount of attention into being fashionable. His archery and love for riding have given him strong arms and legs, and good posture.

[edit] Quotes

  • "Oh, I am totally beaten here."
  • "Not just any pie!"
  • "Sure. Yeah. I liked it. It was fucking great. Fucked her quite a few times, in fact. Never even thought of you! Not once! Might be because she actually had breasts -- and nice ones, at that, filled my hands real well and everything -- and her cunt wasn't lined with fucking thistles, although the comparison is pretty much all fucking guesswork since you've made it pretty fucking clear you don't want me in yours anyway.

Now are you angry?!"

  • "I'm going to take that as "bitter virgin in denial." "
