[edit] Summary
As an inconspicuous thief living off his wits and on the streets, Jace always thought he lived a pretty good life. Then a chance choice on the docks of Colndor introduced him to Lord Kail and dumped him right into the middle of the ongoing crisis of House Franel, piquing his curiosity and introducing him to a large and varied group of travelers from all across Eire -- none of which he ever thought to think of as more than acquaintances, and now many of which he might even consider friends. ...Though of course he insists he sticks around simply because he likes the free ride and the chance to rob the world blind along the way.
[edit] History
Kanemoria; the country of merchants, run by commerce and ruled by trade. While many of its denizens are wealthy, or at least well off, successful due in large part to Kanemoria's advantageous location and its cultural emphasis on the lucrative life of the merchant, none can deny that there will always be those few that slip through the cracks in even the most well founded civilization. Of course, Jace has never considered himself unfortunate or even the least bit unlucky for his lot in life; from his earliest days, he's delighted in the thrill of surviving through the barest merit of his own skill. He lives for the life he's constructed for himself, and even if he were given an opportunity for riches and wealth, he'd never chain himself down to something as mundane as a stuffy profession, least of all in Kanemoria as a merchant trader.
No, for Jace, the merchants are nothing but easy targets, the wealthy are his own personal shopping malls, rife with free merchandise, and even those in his own situation are merely rivals he's more than willing to sabotage if the mood strikes him. He feels no loyalty toward the other thieves he's come across, and no comraderie with the poor. Aloof and distant, Jace depends on himself and no one else, using his clever wit and well honed charms to his advantage at every turn. He owes no loyalty to anyone or anything, and the concepts of honor and chivalry are nothing more than moral chains holding back the foolish majority in his estimation -- not that he's complaining, considering the advantages it allows him.
His life, then, has been more than a little interesting, full of close shaves and thrilling escapades, pilfering from the rich and poor in equal amounts, sneaking across Kanemoria, constantly seeking new challenges. He steals to survive, but he also steals for pleasure, for recreation, for a thrill, whenever the mood strikes him (which is often.) He's very good at what he does, but he doesn't want or expect any infamy for it -- he'd much prefer to remain anonymous, and thus never stays in one place for long. Still, he never has left Kanemoria for long... he's not adverse to travel or seeing the world, but he's quite comfortable in Kanemoria, where the pickings are as easy as he wants them to be, the cities are familiar and the chances of success and survival are high.
If he has a family, he can't recall who they are; he's assumed them dead long since. He holds no sentimentality for blood or the faceless shadows in his memory that might have been his kin. bonds aren't something that Jace is remotely interested in upholding. He's a drifter, thriving off of excitment and challenge, and always pushing himself to the brink of the impossible for reasons not even he can entirely comprehend.
Near the start of his 17th year, after an impulsive decision to stowaway on a ship bound for Dentoria, Jace fell in with a group of displaced travelers lead by a man calling himself Lord Kail of House Franel, a Dentorian House that everyone swears does not -- cannot -- exist. They traveled from Kanemoria to Northern Dentoria, to an empty hill Kail, his siblings, and their retainers swore they once called home. From there he has accompanied the supposed Lords and Lady of Franel across Megam and the southern ocean, driven first by his own curiosity and now perhaps by something more.
He has no intention of actually leaving any time soon, though not a day goes by that he doesn't tell himself he should. And now his 18th year has begun, he is part of a group comprised of many people he has for the first time an inclination to call friends, and as he presses on he wonders how much else a single ship ride will change about his life and outlook on it.
[edit] Personality
A drifter by nature and necessity, Jace is aloof, but not cold -- he likes to make positive impressions, and though he never associates himself with anyone for long, he's smart enough to know when allies are useful. He's also fairly skilled at manipulation, lying, and general deception; of course, by the time most people realize these things he's already long removed himself from their reach.
He's a joker and quite witty, and almost prides himself on his ability to win people over with relative ease. He's not a very trusting person, for obvious reasons. He has a certain disdain for people that chain themselves down to a profession or particular path of life; this includes the vast majority of people in the continent, needless to say. Even those with nomadic natures like his own, who live doing what they enjoy instead of what the perceive is expected of them, rarely earn his respect -- as far as he's concerned, everyone is a potential target -- the only differences between them are priorities.
Jace is intelligent, analytical, and very well read. He is quite disdainful of religion, and delights in harassing the devout.
[edit] Relationships
- Chiel, a fellow thief who he makes no secret concerning his attraction to, often with ill effects to his health.
- Celeste, who he delights in getting a rise out of as often as possible and most certainly couldn't care less about; he's only curious about her situation and purely in a scholarly sense, thank you very much.
- Kail, who he thinks is pretty funny to make fun of.
- Lawrence, who most certainly does not vaguely intimidate him. Absolutely not.
- Sawyer, who he delights in teasing about his sexual preferences, among other things.
- Faith, who he knows doesn't trust him as far as she can throw him, a fact he finds amusing.
- Keagan, who he's recently come to acquire some measure of respect for. (Though he still finds the thought of old people sex distasteful, okay.)
- Matthias, a good friend (though he'd never admit it) and oftentimes partner in crime when it comes to snarking various people on the journals.
- Lauren, who he enjoys making fun of on occassion, and would probably tease more except her whining is so annoying, Dragons.
- Maire, a High Priestess he delights in tormenting. Once stalked her during a brief visit to Megam.
- Terrance, a Priest he also delights in tormenting. Once made him his slave and forced him to do dog tricks, among other things. But not those types of things. Pervert.
- Pearl, a dancer who is recently almost as fond of teasing him as he is of teasing her.
- Andrew, a bard he finds hilarious for his lack of romantic sense among other things.
- Isobel, a bard and yet another of the many people he enjoys pestering when he's bored.
- Finlay, the Prince of Hanalan, who he finds more bemusing than anything, really.
- Nyoka, who he considers a psycho, but at least a fun psycho.
- Fayre, a dancer who is also seemingly just as fond of teasing him as he is of teasing her.
- Tarmon, the heir of Emeron, who wants him dead for publicly humiliating him (alongside Chiel) in his own city.
- Harriet, who he loves to pester alongside Matthias.
- Noland, who he also loves to pester, alongside Chiel. Refers to him as Mistake #1, his long lost son (daughter?)
- Jonathan, a mage traveling in his company he sometimes makes fun of when he's bored. Also theorizes with him. When he's bored.
- Alys, whose ship he has not so fond memories of getting caught stowing away on. Respects her more than most people. Enjoys bantering with her.
- Elliot, a man who once saved his life that he considers insane and sincerely hopes he will never have to travel with again, thank you.
- Lyonesse, a woman traveling in his company he often exchanges sassy comments with, because that's just what he does.
- Maeve, a woman he's certainly not considering paying for sexual services, thank you, he can take care of himself. For free, even! But in the meantime mostly enjoys bantering with her every so often.
- Jordan, who he often makes fun of for being stupid. Not that he gets it, or anything.
- Elden, a performer traveling in his company who often propositions him for things he has absolutely no interest in thank you very much. Doesn't even consider it. Never thought about it. Nope.
- Jasmine, a woman who possibly enjoys pestering him more than he enjoys pestering her.
- Gilbert, an ex-Priest that he pretty much loathes.
- Marias, a psycho he finds absolutely hilarious.
- Julian, the Prince of Kanemoria, who is quite bemusing. And has very nice dungeons. Except not really.
- Hasten, Lord of House Lireth, who wants him dead for publicly berating him over the journals on more than one occassion. Does not vaguely frighten him. Nope. Absolutely not.
- Annie, a girl from Hanalan he sometimes enjoys teasing and mostly likes talking to, go figure.
[edit] Appearance
Jace is rather thin and of short-to-average height, standing at roughly 5'8". His skin is fair, though it sports a slight tan, indicative of the fact that he lives the vast majority of his life outdoors. He has green eyes and short black hair. The clothes he wears are patched and simple; he makes it a point to dress as unremarkably as possible, outfitting himself in faded and loose fitting clothes that allow for mobility, comfort, and anonymity.
[edit] Quotes
"So if I peed on you, would you consider it assault?"
"Kanemoria, I can almost smell it already. It smells like corruption. And fish."
"Terrance. Fetch~"
"Oh, stop it. I'm not going anywhere, and only said I was to get a rise out of you. It worked. Congratulations, you're predictable."
"Roll the dice. You don't run off into the rain without a fire to come back to as often as I have without catching something every once in awhile."
[edit] Other
Jace's journal is smirking_shadow. He is played by Elzie and PB'd by Ferio of Magic Knight Rayearth.
