[edit] History

Born third to Megam’s prestigious House Theane, nine years younger than his older brother, and eleven younger than it’s heir, Emery was never expected to inherit his father’s lands. (Which was probably a good thing, diplomacy was lost on him, charima was likely to be on a list of ‘major qualities Emery of Theane does not possess’, and speaking one on one in any sort of serious situation tended to result in disaster at the best of times.) Emery was left to pursue any suitable life he wished – although it was made clear to him that his parents would be thrilled if he chose this freedom to enter the clergy.

And since he didn’t really have any other ideas, that one seemed good enough.

As it turned out, he had something of a knack for it. His mind seemed to soak up Scripture like a sponge, once he heard a passage, it was near impossible to forget. So, to, did he warm to the staff, able to draw a great deal of power from them with seemingly minimal effort. His faith was impressive and unconditional, as well. All agreed he was destined for the clergy, planned to enter when he was seventeen, and there was no path he wanted more.

Then came the doubts.

Theane’s ally, House Lysel, a day’s ride away, had an heir very near Emery’s own age. He and Destin had grown up together, never far from one another’s sides. While Destin was mean and conceited and not funny at all, Emery would never admit it, but he valued his companion’s company more than any other, considering him his dearest friend, his closest confidant, his most important person. Never particularly close with his older brothers, and “friendly” at best with his parents, Destin was always the human connection Emery had with the world, what made him real, made him alive. It was when attempting to put some sort of words to his feelings while writing Destin a letter for his birthday that Emery finally realized what it was.

He was in love.

Emery had always felt different around boys then with girls. Standing too close flustered him, and he reacted to them in ways he expected he was supposed to be saving for women. In his mind, however, he had named this a phase, and a passing one, trying to ignore it, especially the much more pronounced versions of these feelings he felt when it was Destin. But this, these feelings ... they changed everything.

Emery attempted to distance himself from Destin and find absolution in his prayers and devotions, but nothing would take Destin from his mind ... and to his horror, he found himself becoming more and more certain that given the choice to forsake his holiness or forsake Destin, the choice was dismayingly easy to make ...

He decided that he had no choice but to enter the clergy. Anything else, and questions would be asked, this was everything he had ever wanted, after all, why quit now? This was everything he’d wanted and worked for.

And so he lives his double life. Rising in the ranks, blessing the commonfolk and the nobility, presenting himself spotless, holy, honourable.

Only he knows what an unrepentant sinner he really is.

[edit] Personality

Timid, skittish, and easily intimidated, Emery has never been a particularly eloquent or confident young man, a far cry from the usual Megam nobleman. It’s almost a blessing for him that he’s chosen the more humble road of the clergy.

Where he stutters and flusters and makes an embarrassment of himself in social situations, he can manage a great deal of confidence and presence while leading a congregation in prayer, or reading from the Scriptures. He comes alive when talking about religion, cheeks flushing and eyes glowing.

Women fluster Emery horribly. Flirting women are especially bad, because he has simply no idea how to react, to the point where he has seriously debated taking a vow of chastity, before he panicked at the possibility of his reasons being skewed.

However, as bad as women are, men are worse. Destin, especially, can instantly turn him into a ball of flushed, stammering, defensive nerves.

Over all of this, Emery is a sweet, kind, generous, young man, who just happens to react violently (and amusingly) to certain things that set him off. He smiles often and quite adorably, loves to make others happy (especially Destin) and is quite happy to spend time in the company of others, despite how much he sucks at actually talking to them.

When alone with Destin, Emery manages to unwind himself a bit and talk more normally, with all his sweet, earnest nature, and none of the stammering skittish xenophobia. He trusts Destin utterly, and values his company and closeness more than anything else in the world.
